Tooth Filling

Tooth fillings are a restorative treatment to repair, chips, cracks, or cavities in your teeth. Cavities start on the surface of the tooth, wear down the enamel, and may cause considerable damage. The sooner you have dental treatment, the better the outcome is likely to be.

At Navdeep Dental Care™, we numb the area with a local anesthetic agent and remove the decayed portion of the tooth. We make sure that all the decay is removed by probing around the tooth. The cavity is cleaned thoroughly by chlorhexidine 0.12% and other medicaments remove any bacteria. If the decay is near the dental pulp, we make sure to provide suitable base medicaments to ensure remineralization of the tooth followed by filling with composite resin or glass ionomer cement. After the cavity is filled, restoration done is polished to stop the further sticking of food.

The most common materials for tooth fillings are amalgam, ceramic, composite, glass ionomer, gold, porcelain, and silver. Amalgam is silver and contains materials including mercury, mixed with copper, silver, and tin. Amalgam fillings are very durable and may last for up to 15 years

Ceramic fillings are usually made of porcelain and are resistant to food stains. Ceramic fillings are usually long-lasting. Resin composite fillings are created from a resin base and powdered glass, silica, or quartz. The fillings are tooth colored for a natural appearance.

Glass ionomer is a common tooth-filling material used for younger children and cavities that are below the gum line. The tooth has protection from further tooth decay since the material releases fluoride into the tooth to prevent more decay.

A glass ionomer filling will generally last for approximately five years. Porcelain is another filling material with the natural appearance of your teeth. Tooth-colored porcelain fillings contain minerals that include kaolin, feldspar, or quartz.

Gold is the choice of many dental patients due to its durability. Cast gold fillings don’t corrode and may last ten to 15 years or longer. Gold is very strong so a tooth isn’t as likely to crack from eating certain foods and some patients prefer the appearance of gold.

Tooth Filling At Navdeep Dental Care™

Porcelain and gold are two types of indirect fillings that must be created in a lab before your dentist places the fillings. Indirect fillings usually require two visits to your dentist.

The first visit is to take impressions. The filling is placed on the second visit. The two types of indirect fillings are inlays and onlays.

These fillings are typical when a filling can’t be supported but the damage isn’t enough for a dental crown. Your dentist will discuss the various options available to you.
